What made this possible? What is K-12?

K to 12 Program, which was implemented in 2013, covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education composed of elementary education (6 years), Junior High School (4 years), and an additional 2 years of Senior High School. Its aim is to grant an adequate period for mastery of concepts and skills, cultivate lasting learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, entrepreneurship, and provide some solutions to the extensive unemployment of the youth while allowing them access to high-paying jobs.

The added two years of SHS is made up of two parts: (1) the Track Subjects, which covers the development of skills for prompt employment or entrepreneurship, and (2) the Core Subjects which ensure that students who graduate from K-12 are ready for college. It also promotes 4 career track choices for students: Academic, Technical-Vocational-Livelihood, Sports, and Art & Design.

These separate career tracks allow flexibility for student graduates. Relying on the goals of the student, and the community and industry requirements in a specific region, the Track Subject Curriculum upgrades the value and importance of the high school diploma. Evenly important, the Core Subject Curriculum, remaining consistent for all schools, administers an opportunity for everyone to be equitably well-prepared for a college education academically.

By incorporating the granting of TESDA National Certificates at the high school level, K-12 students who will then be of legal age once they graduate senior high school would be ready to take decent entry-level and high-paying jobs. This also boosts the financial capacities of senior high school graduates who wish to continue advancement through higher education.

This time, we can safely say that “change is good.” Because of the changes in our education system, these high-paying jobs are now accessible to senior high school graduates, allowing them to earn even without a college degree.
