Essentially, clothes serve a practical purpose, which is why many people prefer to throw together an outfit without giving much thought to it. But clothes also give us the power to feel more confident and express our individuality and personality. When you find your unique personal style, you can expect to feel empowered with your attire and even more comfortable in your skin. With that said, a lot of people have difficulty navigating their personal style. It’s easy to stick to wearing what you know or have your vision clouded by what everyone else is wearing. Follow these tips to make your journey to unlocking the full potential of your style quicker and more effective.

1. Look Beyond Trendy Pieces

It’s easy to mistake trendy and timely pieces for your personal style. New trends emerge almost every season, and you can get so caught up in them that you don’t know what you genuinely like or not after the trend has passed. That’s why it’s best to not pay close attention to what is trending in the fashion industry because there is a good chance the trends that emerge will be short-lived. Explore your options to find the clothes and accessories that you think are timeless for the foreseeable future, and then you can add on trendy pieces from time to time to match your personal style.

2. Think About Your Lifestyle

Your personal style needs to harmoniously and seamlessly match with your daily life. Your daily activities, like your job and hobbies, may play a major role in your personal style. If you are on the go a lot, then you may lean more towards a casual style as opposed to a more dressed-up style. It’s also important to keep in mind that different events or parts of your day call for different types of outfits. You need fitness attire for participating in active hobbies, more formal clothes for black tie events, everyday attire, work attire, and so on. What does that mean for you? It means that even if you are most comfortable with jeans and sneakers, it isn’t always appropriate to wear them for every event (i.e. a wedding or corporate event). You can find an outfit that aligns with your personal style for every type of occasion.

3. Don’t Underestimate Accessories

While clothes make up the majority of your outfit, accessories like jewellery, shoes, and handbags have just as integral of a role in creating a look. They are small additions that can elevate an outfit, and they don’t always have to be flashy or take center stage in your outfit. You may find that hats are your thing, or there’s more to life than backpacks, and so on. The best part about acquiring accessories is that there isn’t an issue with size and fit, so you can easily order from an online jewellery store and not feel worried about whether or not it will fit.

4. Experiment With Different Looks

You can’t find your unique personal style if you don’t try anything outside of your comfort zone — at least once. That doesn’t mean you need to feel uncomfortable by doing so. At the end of the day, you need to feel confident and comfortable with your personal style, or else it won’t be considered “personal”. You don’t even need to leave the house and go out in public when experimenting with different styles either. Simply pull a few different garments and try them out in the dressing room, or borrow a piece of clothing from your friend that you may have never bought yourself. You may be pleasantly surprised at the different things that appeal to you when you branch out.

5. Scan Existing Styles

Truth be told, it’s difficult to reinvent the wheel and think of a style that no one else has thought of before. Chances are that your personal style closely aligns with the main elements of common styles. So that is a great place to start. Search magazines, mood boards, or social media for already existing styles and see which one calls out to you. For example, if you like classy, modest, and neutral clothing, then maybe the preppy style is ideal for you. Like flowy dresses with a lot of wiggle room and fun patterns? Then look into the bohemian style. The options are endless and at least one is bound to be your favorite.

6. Seek Extra Opinions

Have a fashion-enthusiastic friend who’s been eager to style you before? This is the time to give them a chance. Let them take you shopping, either in the mall or in their closet, to find what pieces they pick out for you that you may not have chosen for yourself. Sometimes those around us are better at pinpointing what looks good or bad than we are. If you want more of a professional opinion, you can seek a personal stylist or a styling consultation to help you out.

Hopefully, these tips will help guide you through your journey to finding your unique personal style!
