An above-ground pool is a popular selection for residential homes. It’s an excellent temporary installation that offers some benefits of owning an inground pool without the drawbacks of intensive construction, space availability, and high installation costs. People on rental properties are particularly fond of above-ground pools.

Contrary to popular opinion, several rules and regulations apply to the installation and maintenance of above-ground pools. These cover everything from where to install the pool to the fencing and filtration requirements. Here are some important considerations before installing an above-ground Pool

Location

Although an above-ground pool is small and portable, some local authorities limit where you can install it. In some residential regions, installation is prohibited along the front lawn. Other authorities extend the rule to the side walls. As a result, the backyard remains the only proper location for an above-ground pool installation.

Furthermore, pool installation is prohibited in areas above drainage lines, water tanks, and utility lines. These laws are often put in place by local authorities or homeowners associations. Therefore, checking with the relevant authorities before picking a spot for your above-ground pool is essential.

Construction

Above-ground pools have minimal construction requirements. The main work is ground preparation, which involves leveling and reinforcement. Installation of the filtration system, pumps, and pool accessories is also considered part of the pool construction activities.

Most local authorities issue construction permits before the installation of an above-ground pool commences. Furthermore, the license is displayed at the construction site as part of the inspection requirements.

Construction permits ensure proper procedures are followed during the pool installation, and that the right team handles the job. The license may cover the installation process or specific activities like electrical installation, ground preparation, or plumbing. Therefore, it’s essential to confirm with your local authorities.

Fencing

Pool fencing is a mandatory consideration that guarantees the safety of pool users and all residents. A fence limits access to the pool and prevents accidents that can cause drowning. Moreover, the barrier prevents pets and babies from wandering into the pool.

Nonetheless, fencing follows specific laws. Most local authorities provide guidelines on the minimum requirements for a safety fence. Among some authorities, the wall of the above-ground pool is considered sufficient to serve as a fence. However, some authorities require fences to meet the standard height of 1.5 metres with a maximum of 90 millimetre gaps between pickets. Moreover, the space between the ground and the bottom rail ought to maintain the 90 millimeter requirement.

The access way along the fence should also have a self-latching gate that remains closed during idle time.

Electrical installations

Where there is water and electricity, trouble might be brewing. As a result, compliance codes are put in place to guide electrical installations around above-ground pools.

As standard, overhead electrical lines cannot hang less than 6 metres above a pool. However, telephone lines and cable T.V can hang as low as 3 metres above the pool water. Furthermore, all electrical outlets should be at least 6 metres away. If the outlet is earthed, you can install it up to 2.5 metres from the pool.

Filtration

A filtration system is an essential requirement for above-ground pools. Local authorities provide codes that lay out the suction regulations for the pump and filter.

Inspection

Finally, pools are subject to inspection by local authorities. Officers may visit your property at any stage of the installation process to evaluate the pool’s compliance to local rules and regulations. Poor compliance may incur fines or lead to complete license rejection.

Since keeping track of all the rules and codes that apply to the above-ground pool is challenging, you can contact a professional pool company to handle the construction. It will save money and time.
