MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Listeria lawyers at Pritzker Hageman, a national food safety law firm, are investigating a deadly and long-running Listeria outbreak linked to nutritional shakes served at hospitals and long-term care facilities. These products, meant for medically vulnerable patients, have caused serious illness and death.
The recalled frozen supplemental shakes, manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy and distributed by Lyons Magnus under the Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial brands, have been making people sick since at least 2018. According to the FDA’s February 24 update, the outbreak has infected 38 people across 21 states, resulting in 37 hospitalizations and 12 deaths.
A Pattern of Food Safety Failures
This is not the first major recall for Lyons Magnus. While patients were already falling ill from Listeria contaminated shakes, the company issued another recall in 2022 for alternative milks and protein shakes due to potential Cronobacter contamination – the same bacteria that led to the shutdown of Abbott’s baby formula production earlier that year.
These back-to-back recalls raise serious concerns about food safety failures and oversight gaps in meal replacement products served to high-risk individuals.
Vulnerable Patients Put at Risk
Listeria is especially dangerous for hospital patients and long-term care residents, many with weakened immune systems. What should have been a trusted source of nutrition instead became a serious health threat to those least able to fight infection.
Pritzker Hageman’s Managing Partner Eric Hageman emphasized the serious implications of this outbreak, “Hospitals and long-term care facilities should be the last place anyone has to worry about foodborne illness, but this outbreak shows how serious food safety failures can be. Even more troubling, cases go back to 2018. Families deserve answers, and we’re here to help them get justice.”
